Reversible & Irreversible in the I Ching

The analysis of the binary or 'Fu Hsi' order of the I Ching (currently identified by me as the Horizontal Binary Sequence - h-s or HBS) reflects an archetypal perspective with a listing of all structure based on the recursion of the yin/yang dichotomy where, for each level of recursion, the output is deemed to be built 'bottom up'. (as in http://pages.prodigy.net/lofting/DIAG1.gif )

The sequence of hexagrams that emerge from this process reflect the range of qualities identifiable within the confines of pure yin (000000) and pure yang (111111) and as such serves as a parts list of all of the qualities possible after six levels of recursion.

This ordered set of qualities can be used as a measurement of 'cyclic' behaviour and so an assumed link to time concepts HOWEVER it lacks any clear sense of the irreversible, which is a concept fundamental to our experience of time in our thermodynamically determined universe.

Thus the time sense in the HBS reflects a mechanistic concept of time which IS reversible, one hexagram can lead into another
and visa versa, there is no consideration of energy costs etc.

The HBS is tied to an archetypal perspective where the concept of time is limited to notions of being 'eternal' or else impoverished to being reversible and so 'mechanistic'. The focus is on degree of expression.

Thus any cyclic behaviour mapped using the Fu Hsi sequence is more suited to mapping changes in energy expression rather than time issues; for example it suits a 'thermostat' perspective and such concepts as phase transitions where immediate reversibility is permitted.

As such we can use it to represent a cycle but in doing so will still have a sense of something 'missing' and this seems to be in the intuitive understanding of time being irreversible, we can REPEAT a cycle but not go in reverse through a cycle - which the Fu Hsi, or HBS, ordering has no semantic problem with.

When we focus on a specific hexagram we can identify a 'binary' sequence that works from the bottom of the hexagram through all 64 possible line combinations to the top. This binary sequence , I call the Vertical Binary Sequence, v-s or VBS, has an interesting property in that the order is NOT reversible from a SEMANTIC perspective. For example, the path from hexagram 24 to 02 is NOT reversible but IS repeatable where the repeatition requires going through all states described by the other 62 hexagrams before the cycle can repeat.

Thus the process of total devotion does not immediately lead to returning to the one 'true' path but more so the return leads to the development of total devotion; there is an immediate temporal 'flow' from 24 to 02 [I must return to the path to express all aspects of devotion] whereas the flow from 02 to 24 reflects the cycle, the required journey around the cycle of 'devotion' to its end (24) which is the pre-requisite required to start-off the cycle once again; IOW the cycle of the quality of devotion includes 'falling' off the path.

When we compare these processes to the HBS, the 'flow' in that sequence is more reflection of energy expression which IS reversible immediately (hex 02 [000000] can go to 23 [000001] and 23 go back to 02, I am not forced to go around the full cycle); my temperature can be 100, 101, 100 in immediate steps. Water can change to ice and back to water in 'immediate' steps. IOW if I start with a temperature of 100 I do not have to go through the range of 'permissible' temperatures to get back to 98.6!

The HBS is the I Ching sequence that best fits a 'thermostat' perspective. The VBS is the I Ching sequence that best fits a true, 'time' sequence of irreversible processes that works through cycles. If the sequence PERSPECTIVE is limited to just two hexagrams there is no perceivable difference in HBS and VBS in that A to B and B cycling back to A would appear as if 'reversible' and as such we can get 'hooked' by that perspective, not realising the loop process rather than the reversal process.

As such, mapping the HBS reflect the SPECIFIC expressions of energy and as such the highs and lows expressed in the amplitude of a wave. BUT each expression, captured in the symbol of the hexagram, comes with a history, its own development PATH through TIME that is reflected in the VBS. As such in the Cartesian mappings, the energy is to the Y-axis and the time is to the X-axis!

Thus we can imagine the HBS as being static, an archetype, an ordering of energy qualities but the whole sequence has a dynamic where each hexagram is moving 'forward' in its own cycle (in the diagram referred to above, imagine the sequence of hexagrams all moving to the 'top' of the page as they cycle. I will attempt to create a 'megamatrix' of these processes in the form of a .gif with horizontal sequence across the bottom and each hexagram's temporal in column format. This will of course create more rows which may be of interest...)

Of note above is the emphasis on binary representations of our nature but in truth here is the delusion - it is NOT truly binary. Our nature is 1:many rather than 1:1. The 1:1 is used as a mechanism to derive 'detail' and as such reflects an
idealist perspective in search of archetypes (and on into stereotyping etc and the idealist 101 Physics "...lets consider a falling object .. but ignore wind resistence..") The method of deriving a hexagram 'truely' is NOT a coin toss but more a ritual that contains within it a BIAS to the many over the 1 - it reflects our natural favouring of conserving energy rather than expending it. As such coin tosses are 'delusions' BUT the intense focus IS 1:1 and as such the tosses can be interpreted as being 'of value' - they are just 'approximates'! (IOW they LACK a qualitative element) A DICHOTOMY comes in more that one 1:1 flavour, it is a term used to describe BRANCHING (more 1:many) and has its roots (!) in Botony. THAT perspective takes us into bifurations etc etc

The 1:1 format of TIME is reflected in the idealist notions of time as being something reversible - as if it is the idealist path a pendulum takes as it swings back and forth (and so again 'ignoring wind, gravity differences etc etc'). This format of time reflects 'thermostat' thinking whereas thermodynamic thinking gets into non reversible but repeatable (the pendulum can 'oscillate' sideways as well and so more 'cycle' and no reversing along the same path)

Note how in mechanistic time concepts of a 'cycle' is more often represented as from 000000 to 111111 and then we 'reverse'. This reflects the original use of pendulums to
measure time and the generalisation of the process to REFLECT time (BE time). As such the 111111 is the opposite of 000000 but in thermodynamic time the 'end' of the cycle is in fact the direct PRE-REQUISITE for the beginning and as such we REPEAT the cycle. IOW 000000 goes to 000001 where the latter is the end and so 'seed' for the next step - 000000 and the cycle repeats (and so time in the pendulum is more a complete left-right-left 'swing')

Associations of time to 000000-111111 and reverse reflect attempts to use a mechanistic perspective on time and as such reflects the recruitment of measurement of ENERGY expression to measure time (as in a thermostat). an error. It WILL work in that the range of the qualities can be interpreted as 'cyclic' but it isnt truely so, an issue of perceptions. AS such time is impoverished by being treated as 'simple' mechanics at best, denied at worst (or labelled as 'eternity'). Delusion.

From understanding these differences I have demonstrated above TWO different sequences that are binary in that they are tightly linked through the use of binary notation applied to the yin/yang BUT the DIRECTION of development gives the TWO perspectives - top down binary as compared to the traditional bottom up. The LATTER gives you a sequence of energy EXPRESSIONS (fine detail) and mechanistic time. The former gives you a sequence of TIME EXPRESSIONS (as in irreversible) and mechanistic energy. You will not find any of this in any published text on the IC in the West (at least) because the majority of the gurus have no idea what they are dealing with - IC is NOT some 'spirits' derived prediction system - it is a metaphor that reflects our brain and how it derives meaning.

The reader should now be able to now understand why I call my work I Ching PLUS - it gives the hard core IChingers a breathing space since it is hard for many to realise that the IC, taken so literally as a 'magical' source of wisdom is in fact a REFLECTION of US and created by US at a time when strong metaphors and rich anthropomorphisms 'ruled'.

Religion/Tradition perpetuates the 'words' and so we still talk about 'angels' and being 'guided' etc Delusion. Our '
angels' are our instincts/habits and they especially 'push' us in unknown or unusual contexts.
