The I Ching tells us about hexagram 09
The I Ching is a language. Its 'letters' are in the form of images reflecting generic, holistic, organic, qualities of meaning. The set of images is finite and the language is at a level of being able to describe itself through reference to itself by the method of analogy (thus the I Ching is "autological"). This allows us to describe the details of a hexagram through a manipulation of logic and the use of analogy. The following thus describes the details of the current hexagram through analogy to each of the other hexagrams. The logic used is in interpretation of hexagrams as part/whole interactions - as such the following is like a hexagram's spectrum and so a 'parts list'.

Some PAIRS of hexagram 09 with other hexagrams:
- In the binary sequence hexagram 09 pairs with hexagram 05.
- This pairing reflects the overall focus on betterment, be it through establishing contacts whilst waiting
for the 'right moment' (05) or through the summing of small gains upon which to stand and so eventually be noticed
(09).
- In the binary sequence hexagram 09 opposes hexagram 16.
- This pair reflects methods in achievement, either through making small gains (09) or by the use of foresight
and so planning (16).
At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the HEAVEN trigram as base. In this sequence
hexagram 09, the focus on making small gains to stand upon and be noticed, is 'opposed' by hexagram 34, the external
source of invigoration/inspiration. More so, the immediate inspiration of 34 is reflected in a more balanced format
by the gradual accumulation (and so integrating) small gains reflected in 09.
- In the traditional sequence hexagram 09 pairs with hexagram 10.
- This pairing reflects the overall emphasis on hierarchic formats where in 10 the focus is on rigid maintaining
of hierarchy and in 09 the focus is on building-up 'deeds', making small gains, that one can stand upon to be noticed
and so be influencial, reflecting the support mechanisms required to get to, be at, the 'top' as well as the need
to 'know one's place'.
GAIN:

- In the traditional sequence hexagram 09 opposes hexagram 56.
- This pairing reflects issues of foundation setting, be it from developing one's own foundations (09) or
adopting, and remaining loyal to, those of another (56).
- The generic properties of hexagram 09 reflect the mixing of the generic properties
of hexagram 05
with the generic properties of hexagram 48.
- Hexagram 05 reflects generic properties of having to wait for an opportunity that comes one's way. Hexagram
48 reflects the generic properties of establishing a foundation of 'nourishment'. These properties mixed together
give us the generic properties of hexagram 09 with the main focus on development over time and so having to bide
one's time (but dont waste it, use the time to establish useful relationships) but be opportunist.
- In the variations on a theme sequence, hexagram 09 complements hexagram 57.
- The overall focus is on being cultivation and being influencial, be it in the archetypal form expressed
as being like the wind (57) or in the 'softly softly' form of making small gains and standing upon them to become
noticed and so become influencial (09).
