44 Persuading, Seducing
In a context of cultivation we utilise singlemindedness.

Trigrams : cultivating (bottom), singlemindedness (top) : with/from cultivation comes singlemindedness. [heaven over wind]

The mud from which 44 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 43, spread-the-word.

Commentary :

In hexagram 44 we are crossing the border. It symbolises the way from the light to the passive and seductive dark. A point of potential and non-innocence far from the actual and innocent. It is the path from the firm to the yielding, emphasized in the image by the using of the concept of fate as a tool to control the people (i.e. "It is supposed to be this way, it is fated."). The line comments emphasize the concept of holding on to things possibly past their, or your, time; their apparent 'value' keeping the tie. Contextually, we are combining seeding with commitment.

Goal of 44 - hexagram 13 (or 'how do I 13? - 44')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects Filtration (through discernment). The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (through competition). The focus is on persuasion and seduction as examples of discernment through competitive exchange.

44 is the goal of 01 (or 'how do I 44? - 01')

A focus on PAIRINGS covering hexagram 44 paired with other hexagrams:

This pairing reflects 'going beyond' the norm, be it in aiding someone/something (the excess of 28, to go the extra distance) or in the act of persuasion/seduction of another (44).
This pair reflects issues of being drawn back to a path (24) vs being seduced away from a path (44).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the WIND trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 44, the focus upon persuading and seducing, 'opposes' hexagram 46, becoming willingly more entangled. More so, the exaggerated sense of persuasion/seduction (44) is reflected in a more balanced format through a focus in increased entanglement (46).

The overall focus in this pairing is on being 'persuasive', be it through the 'spreading of the word' of 43 or the more seductive methods of 44.

DRAW ATTENTION:

43 : draw attention - through spread the word; 43 spread the word comes from a context described by hexagram 44 - persuade, seduce, put the word

44 : draw attention - through put the word; 44 put the word, persuade, comes from a context described by hexagram 43 - spread the word

A combination of excess, of going beyond what is required, (28), with a focus on 'seeding', on 'spreading the word' (43) is reflected in the focus on persuasion/seduction in hexagram 44.
The pairing of hexagram 01 and 44 reflects the subtle differences in expression focused on the base line of a trigram. Here the 'rigidity' of yangness, as expressed in hexagram 01, is 'softened' at a general level to be reflected in the focus of hexagram 44 on seduction and so the need for persuasion to achieve one's goal. In pure yangness there is no such need where the natural leadership skills reflected in 01 elicit immediate respect.
