13 Associating, Likemindedness
In a context of guidance we utilise singlemindedness.

Trigrams : guidance (bottom), singlemindedness (top) : with/from guidance comes singlemindedness. [heaven over fire]

The mud from which 13 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 31, wooing.

Commentary :

In hexagram 13, to avoid conflict (6) we form a loose alliance with like-minded people. 7 and 13 symbolize alliances either loose (13) or structured (07).06 and 36 symbolize the individual alone, no army or like-minded to protect/help. (There is the implication of separating the goats from the sheep.) The initial context of restrained joining leads to a growing number of associates.

Hexagram 13 is the general form of hexagram 02

Goal of 13 - hexagram 33 (or 'how do I 33? - 13')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Fire reflects Distribution. The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (competitive, opposition). Distribution through competitive exchange reflects associating with 'likeminded' for business.

13 is the goal of 44 (or 'how do I 13? - 44' How do I make loose associations with others? through persuading/seducing or allowing oneself to be persuaded/seduced)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 13 with other hexagrams:
This pair reflects basics of guidance issues through associating with the likeminded to differentiate 'us' from 'them' (13) or through the revelation of the facts behind the facade (49). The focus on revelation extends into the concept of revolution where the 'old guard' is shown to be corrupt in some way and in need of being changed. The likemindedness focus is on singlemindedness in a context of guidance (13).
This pairing reflects an approach to likemindedness, be it through a mindedness formally imposed (hexagram 07) or one based on casual associations with others (hexagram 13).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the FIRE trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 13, the exaggerated focus upon likemindedness, 'opposes' hexagram 36, with its focus on being uncompromising, hiding the light rather than sharing it. More so, the exaggerated focus on 'likemindedness', of sharing the 'light' is reflected in a more balanced format by a focus on covering-up the light.

IMPOSE DIRECTION:

13 : impose directions through associations - passive; 13 loose associations comes out of a context described by hexagram 31 - wooing, restrained structuring

14 : impose directions through associations - active; 14 centered, directing associations comes out of a context described by hexagram 32 - strong commitment

In this pairing there is a sense of quality present, in 13 it is expressed in association with the 'likeminded' whereas in 52 the focus is internal, developing one's own sense of discernment.
A focus on revelation (49), combined with an intensity in establishing a relationship (31) reflect the generic properties of 13.
