42 Augmenting, Ascending
In a context of enlightenment one becomes influential

The mud from which 42 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 08, unifying.

Commentary :

In hexagram 42 we find a moment given to understanding the cycles. We are far from the points of transition. We are in a position to see the cycles and thus to observe them and learn to use them to succeed (augment oneself) and avoid those that can do damage. This is a step up, a change from one level of refinement to the next; an increase in one's commitment to a path. Contextually, we combine uniting (drawing in) with coming back to the 'true' path and thus augmentation and ascendance.

Goal of 42 - hexagram 20 (or 'how do I 20? - 42')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Thunder reflects Production (new material). The trigram of Wind reflects Production (through re-production, cultivation). The relationship expresses the augmentation of something 'new' or 'raw', to raise it qualitatively.

42 is the goal of 59 (or 'how do I 42? - 59' How do I 'augment'? Through making things VERY clear, dispel all illusions)

In the binary sequence hexagram 42 pairs with hexagram 03.

The overall focus in this pairing is on attaining a 'new' level. As hexagram 03 focuses on pulling things together to 'sprout', so hexagram 42 focuses more on a point of differentiation, the act of augmentation that also reflects a 'new' level.

In the binary sequence hexagram 42 opposes hexagram 32.

In GENERAL there is a sense of going 'up' a level in development, the augmentation of 42, whereas in 32 the focus appears more to be commitment TO a level.

At the LOCAL level the focus is on an octet of hexagrams with THUNDER as base. The association is between hexagram 42 and 51, where the exaggerated sense of 'enlightenment', of sudden awareness etc (51), is reflected in a more balanced format through the process of augmentation (42).

The generic properties of hexagram 42 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 03 with the generic properties of hexagram 08.

A combination of sprouting (03) with a focus upon passive attraction, on belonging (08) is reflected in the expression of augmentation in hexagram 42.
