28 Exceeding
In a context of cultivation we utilise intensity.

Trigrams : cultivation (bottom), intensity (top) : with/from cultivation comes intensity. [lake over wind]

The mud from which 28 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 01, singlemindedness, persevering.

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 28 we learn that in the process of regeneration one must be weary of going to far, for in becoming too full we lead to the path of decay. Contextually, we have gone through a state of too much yang (1) that has then been excessively refined (50) to a degree where it is all too much. (see the line 6 comment below). This hexagram also reflects the positive aspect of excess in the form of going beyond what is required; going the extra distance for someone/something etc..

(The hexagram quartet 17,18,27,28 deals with the concepts of degeneration and regeneration. Structurally 17,18 are the balances to 27,28. Procedurally the cycle goes:

follow-> too much -> decay(corrupt) -> too little -> follow ...   (17)      (28)       (18)               (27)         (17)

Oppositional format : lake against wind.

Template/Persona format : Expansive bonding in a context of contractive binding.

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects cultured Production. The trigram of Lake reflects cooperative Exchange. The concept of cultured production (and so re-production) expressed through cooperative exchange is expressed as excess, as going beyond what is required.

Goal of 28 - hexagram 49 (or 'how do I 49? - 28')

28 is the goal of 43 (or 'how do I 28? - 43' How do I exceed the norm? By being robust, intensely focused upon spreading 'the' word)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 28 and other hexagrams:

This pairing reflects 'going beyond' the norm, be it in aiding someone/something (the excess of 28, to go the extra distance) or in the act of persuasion/seduction of another (44).
This pairing reflects the differences of being 'empty' and so developing a hungering (27) vs being too full (28). This overall focus is on excess, as in excess of emptiness vs excess of fullness. 28 can be extended to include the concept of doing more than is required to aid in someway, to go the extra distance etc.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the WIND trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 18, the focus upon correcting corruptions, 'opposes' hexagram 28, excess, going beyond what is required. More so, the exaggerated sense of excess, of 'going beyond what is required', is reflected in a more balanced format through the focus on correcting corruptions.

In this pair the focus is on consequences of excess, be it an excess of being empty (27) or an excess of being full (28).

EXCESS:

27 : excess - through too little, too empty, needs filling, hungering; 27 hungering comes from a context described by hexagram 02 - devoting, trusting others, dualmindedness

28 : excess - through too much, to full, needs emptying; 28 exceeding comes from a context described by hexagram 01 - singlemindedness, trust in self

In this pairing the rigid structure of 37 is balanced and it serves as tension release, in 28 there is a sense of over-balanced, about to burst and so a presence of tension and exaggeration.
A combination of being 'seductive' (44) with a focus on singlemindedness (01) is reflected in the excess, the exaggerations, the going beyond what is required, states of hexagram 28.
