The mud from which 48 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 09, small gaining

establishment of a foundation, a source of nutrition for development.

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 48, the establishment of a source of nourishment enables the passage from chaos to social order. This 'Well' is passive; its presence encourages people to congregate around it and develop, and thus its influence generates a sense of security and thus overcoming chaos. Contextually we mix making small gainings and correcting corruption into making foundations for the future.

Oppositional format : water against wind.

Template/Persona format : Contractive bounding in a context of contractive binding. Control (preservation/conservation) in a context of cultivation (monitoring).

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects Production (manufactured, cultivated). The trigram of Water reflects Consumption. Production (as cultivation, reproduction) through Consumption reflects a source of nourishment for development - a 'well'.

This pairing reflects the generic focus on cultivation, on foundation setting, and becoming influential. Hexagram 48 focuses on setting-down a 'well' to serve as a source of nourishment around which a collective can form and as such focuses on an integrating nature. Hexagram 57 is more differentiating and more 'dynamic' as it reflects moving to others to cultivate and become influential. Hexagram 57, reflecting wind, focuses on eliciting change through manipulation of context rather than text in that manipulation of context will force the text to adapt and in doing so the focus avoids any direct confrontations re needs for change.
