Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 60, self imposed limits are useful for development. they enable one to set reachable goals and to stretch the limits as well as set up standards by which one can compare progress. This form of discipline helps avoid possible obstruction and oppression. These standardization processes imply the concept of staying and reasoning things out; to separate and distinguish.

Oppositional format : danger against lake (reflection).

Template/Persona format : Contractive Bounding in a context of Expansive Binding. In a context of intense self-reflection/expression works an emphasis on control; we standardise things.

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (through cooperation). The trigram of Water reflects Consumption. Exchange as cooperation feeding into consumption reflects the use of standards.

Goal of 60 - hexagram 29 (or 'how do I 29? - 60' - How do I contain/control? By establishing standards)

This pairing reflects an overall focus on issues of establishing 'clarity', be it through the imposition of standards (60), or the active dispelling of illusions, of lifting the 'fog' (59).

The common theme here is on establishing a constant exterior, a constant expression, as in the introduction of standards reflected by 60, vs the hard exterior but soft interior (and so a source of yielding) of 61. 60 as such focuses on integration and is unconditional, 61 on differentiation where behind the cover is flexibility - and so the conditional.

In the binary sequence hexagram 60 opposes hexagram 56.

Standardisations (60) mean a reduction in choices, but also in any sense of loyalty (56) where since all is standardised there is nothing to get 'excited' about. (56 is overall a differentiating hexagram, reflecting remaining loyal over vast distances in time or space, reflecting the root trigram influence of blocking out - the mountain trigram in its refined form reflects the concept of discernment).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the LAKE trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 38, the focus upon opposing (mirroring), 'opposes' hexagram 60, standardisations. More so, the sharp issues of dealing with opposition, as covered in 38, is reflected in a more balanced format by the use of standardisations, as reflected in 60.

In the traditional sequence hexagram 60 opposes hexagram 05.

This pairing reflects an overall sense of limitation, that imposed on the individual by the times as one waits for an opportune moment to take advantage of (hexagram 05), as well as that formally imposed as a necessity in social organisation, where the imposition of standards eases issues of measurements, formal requirements, etc etc (hexagram 60)

The generic properties of hexagram 60 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 61 with the generic properties of hexagram 59.

A combination of a hard exterior over a soft core (61) combined with a focus on dispelling illusions (59) is reflected in a focus on imposition of standards.

In the variations on a theme sequence, hexagram 60 complements hexagram 29.

The overall issue here is on control, be it through introduction of standards (60) or the general focus on containment to establish control (29).
