16 Foresight, Preparing
In a context of devotion we utilise awareness.

The mud from which 16 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 21 - problem solving (correcting deviations)

A situation focused on planning and nervous excitement in anticipation and rehearsal of possible outcomes.

Commentary :

Cooperative Format : In hexagram 16 resistance can be overcome through enthusiasm and foresight, for one to be eventually accepted; a time for planning.

(34 and 20 symbolize the total acceptance of an individual within society such that their mere presence can influence. 16 and 9 symbolize resistance to an individual and how to overcome it - here foresight emerges from a generic context of problem-solving and firming belief)

Oppositional Format : Hexagram 16 manifests thunder in darkness.

Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 16 is the opposite of hexagram 09 where the focus is upon making small gains to become influential as compared to 16 which plans things first.

Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The Goal of 16 is hexagram 11 (or 'how do I 11? - 16' - how do I harmonise/balance? - plan from the beginning with enthusiasm)

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Earth reflects Filtration (through belief, given rules). The trigram of Thunder reflects raw Production. Filtration through raw production is expressed in planning, foresight, and enthusiasm.

16 is the goal of 51 (or 'how do I 16? - 51' - how do I plan, enthuse? Be aware of all possibilities, start-out afresh.)

In the binary sequence hexagram 16 pairs with hexagram 35.

In this pairing there is an overall sense of 'things to come', with the focus in 35 on making progress through differentiation by bringing 'something' into the light, and the focus on integration in 16 through the unconditional use of foresight and planning.

In the binary sequence hexagram 16 opposes hexagram 09.

The opportunism of 09, where we accumulate small gains upon which to stand and go 'higher' is opposed by the use of foresight and enthusiastic planning to achieve one's ends (16).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the EARTH trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 20, the focus upon being an example, admiration, is 'opposed' by hexagram 16, the use of one's own foresight/planning. More so, the exaggerated sense of open enthusiasm, foresight, and planning is reflected in a more balanced format through being an example for others, a source of admiration and so motivation for others.

In the traditional sequence hexagram 16 opposes hexagram 49.

Just as hexagram 49 covers intense revelations, unmasking, so hexagram 16 reduces the chances of such through the use of foresight.

The generic properties of hexagram 16 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 35 with the generic properties of hexagram 21.

Mixing a focus on bringing something into the light (35) with a focus on problem solving (21) reflects the generic properties of 16 with its focus on foresight and planning (all done with an enthusiastic air).

In this example of variations, 16 focuses on the use of foresight and planning whereas 51 focuses on the 'sudden' moment of enlightenment in understanding.high.

The generic properties of hexagram 19 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 41 with the generic properties of hexagram 04.

Mixing the concept of 'masking' (04) with the notion of concentration, distillation (41) is reflected in the properties of hexagram 19.

In the variations on a theme sequence, hexagram 19 complements hexagram 07.

This pairing reflects issues of command and control, where the rigid ordering of such expressed in hexagram 07 is complemented by the casual focus on approach to the 'high' and the deferring of the high to the 'low' in hexagram 19.
